A type of surgery called laparoscopy is carried out through one or more tiny incisions. The laparoscope, a long, thin tube with a light and a camera connected to the end is the tool used for these procedures. An incision is made in the belly through which the laparoscope is introduced. Without having to do an open operation, the surgeon can see the region they are operating on thanks to the light and camera. The laparoscope can be used in conjunction with other surgical tools that are typically put through smaller abdominal incisions. A "single-site" laparoscopy is one where the instruments can sometimes be put through the same incision. The laparoscopic approach can be used to perform the majority of intestinal and abdominal procedures.
