A pocket that develops around a hair follicle in the crease between the buttocks is known as a pilonidal cyst. The region may resemble a tiny pore or pit in the skin that has a black patch or hair in it. A pilonidal abscess is the medical term for an infection of the cyst. Surgical drainage is necessary for a pilonidal cyst or abscess that is infected. With antibiotics, it won't get better. Surgery may be required to remove the pilonidal cyst if you get recurrent infections. A drug (general anesthesia) may be administered to you to keep you unconscious and pain-free. Alternately, a drug (regional anesthesia) may be administered to you to make you completely unconscious. Rarely, you might just receive local anesthetic medication. The skin's pores and the underlying tissue containing the hair follicles are cut out. The amount of tissue removed will determine whether or not the area is packed with gauze.
