This surgery repairs a weak spot in your abdominal wall. It prevents organs and tissues from bulging out uncomfortably. That's a condition we call a "hernia." To begin, you lie on a surgical table. You're given medicine that relaxes you or puts you to sleep. The surgeon makes an incision in your skin to reach the hernia. The surgeon pushes any bulging tissues back into your abdomen. Then, your abdominal wall is repaired with sutures. Your surgeon may also sew a mesh patch over the hernia to make it stronger. In an inguinal hernia, abdominal fat or a loop of small intestine enters the inguinal canal, a tubular passage through the lower layers of the abdominal wall. A hernia occurs when part of an internal organ (usually the small intestine) protrudes through a weak point or tear in the peritoneum, the thin muscular wall holding the abdominal organs in place resulting in a bulge. In men, inguinal hernias typically develop in the groin area near the scrotum, on one or both (double hernia) sides.
